Olav Haugå had plans to complete his PhD in machine learning and statistics, but when he saw how this field was going to impact all types of industries in the time ahead, the plans were soon changed. During his work on the PhD, he landed a consulting contract with DNB to help them with machine learning and become more data-driven. Shortly after, Olav dropped out of the PhD program and founded Deepinsight.
Dropped out of the doctorate to build a startup
Olav wanted to create a sharp environment in mathematics by gathering a group of smart people under one roof. And it has been going well. Deepinsight has been profitable every year since its inception, and the company has grown from a one-man show to 14 employees, primarily with backgrounds in math and physics.
Deepinsight did well as a consulting company for several years, but when the pandemic broke out, everything changed almost overnight. Monthly revenue plummeted from 1.3 million to 50,000 kroner, and Deepinsight had to lay off most of its employees.
